Even if you have built a new house, this doesn’t mean that the land has not been used before. It could have been old farmland, an old settlement, or a building site.
So remember the old saying that goes, “where there are people, there’s treasure.” So never assume you won’t find anything in your own backyard.

Beaches everywhere attract huge crowds of people who frequently drop stuff which could be a great opportunity (Yet, I still suggest you return lost stuff to the owner as much as possible).

Many states in Australia require you to have a Miner’s Right or Fossicking permit.
Also, national parks are forbidden unless they are covered under your fossicking license.

There is no law that prohibits the use of detectors in Canada! The only limitations are when you use them on private properties …
… Provincial and national parks do not allow metal detector usage, though, in parks that do not have any registered archaeological sites, you can go ahead and explore after getting permission from the park manager.

Getting Permission is not as Hard as you might think!
Obtaining permission to metal detect is not as difficult as you may think! Indeed, getting permission is not something you do just for yourself, but you do it for all detectorists …
… Remember that the more people choose to trespass, the higher is the chances of more regulations and prohibitions get placed on the hobby.
After all, the worst thing that can happen is that you will get a No, in which case there are still lots of other places to search. Additionally, when you obtain permission for searching, it makes your detecting much more enjoyable and stress-free!
The first thing you need to do is to locate the actual owner of the site where you want to detect. This is important because you can’t just take the word of someone else (neighbor, tenant, etc.) who says that the owner won’t mind. If you cannot talk to actual owner, then do not go ahead and start detecting on the land!
Once you find him, do not call them on the phone, but instead go directly to their front door. Ask for permission on the same day as you intend to metal detect.

That’s why you should have the courage to ask! After all, the worst that can happen is that your request will be turned down – in which case you can move on to another exciting piece of land!
